Does Traveling Make You More Creative?

Posted by No Comment

There are lots of benefits to traveling, but did you know that traveling can make you more creative?

According to Dale Davidson, a writer for MeetPlanGo.com, “Travel is one of the most creativity inducing activities you can do.”

Why is this? Firstly, “Travel offers you the time to be alone with your thoughts, even if you’re not physically alone.”

Being in that state of relaxed awareness (often known as the ‘Samurai state’) where your brain is active and alert but doesn’t have anything to focus on (i.e. in the shower) is often when a person comes up with their best ideas.

As well as putting you in a contemplative, creative mood, travel also boosts your creativity by giving you more reference points for new ideas. As Davidson says, “Creativity is primarily about connecting the dots. Travel exposes you to lots of dots.”

It is often thought that good ideas are typically a combination of lots of small parts (or smaller ideas), put together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

Traveling exposes you to lots of new ways of living, new ways of doing things and radical concepts that you won’t have previously considered (i.e. new jigsaw pieces).

As Steve Jobs once said, “creativity is just connecting things.”

Steve Jobs (possibly one of the most creative men to ever live), before starting Apple, took a 7-month long trip to India. Is it a coincidence then that he proceeded to play a key role in the development of a host of great products? Perhaps not.
