How to Visit the Galapagos Islands on a Tight Budget

The Galapagos Islands in Ecuador (made famous by Charles Darwin) are one of the world’s most beautiful, exotic and interesting places.

Unfortunately, a place with such a historic reputation that’s so ecologically special is always going to be expensive to visit – unless you happen to know a few of the Galapagos Islands’ inside secrets.

Jessica Festa of Gadling.com recently visited the Galapagos Islands, and picked up a few tips along the way when it comes to visiting on a tight budget.

Jessica states that you can save a lot of money by NOT booking your cruise (if indeed you wish to take a cruise around the islands) in advance:

If you want to do a cruise, fly into Baltra Island and take a cheap bus to Puerto Ayora in Santa Cruz. This is the port where most cruises leave from. You’ll be able to book a last minute cruise for half the original price.

So how much money can you save doing this?

Two backpackers I went diving with told me about how an eight-day cruise that was originally almost $3000 cost them a mere $1,200.

Wow! That’s quite a saving…

Another great way to save money is to participate in a volunteer project:

Ecuador Eco Volunteer offers an affordable program based in Santa Cruz, helping get rid of invasive plant species and cleaning up beaches. Moreover, there are various WWOOFing projects on the islands, where you’ll be able to volunteer on an organic farm in exchange for room and board.

In addition to booking your cruise in advance (or even skipping the cruise altogether) and taking part in a volunteering project, Jessica recommends traveling during the shoulder season (which is from April to June and from September to December), taking advantage of the free activities on offer, searching out the budget hotels or even camping to save money.
