Megabus Launches £1 Bus Service to Europe

The UK-based branch of budget coach operator Megabus recently launched new services from London to four major European cities.

The best part? Fares start at just £1.

Megabus is famous for offering ultra-cheap bus services around the UK, but now their yellow and blue coaches will be traveling from London to Amsterdam, Paris, Brussels and Boulonge.

Unlike most budget airlines (who attach all sorts of baggage fees and extra taxes when flying), Megabus’ low prices are exactly as they’re stated. Your ticket price includes the ferry crossing and you’ll get access to free Wi-Fi throughout the journey.

Although I haven’t been able to find any of the advertised £1 fares yet, the lowest fare I found was from London to Paris (which was £4 per person).

Megabus’s spokesman announced that fares for these four trips (to Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Boulonge) will range from £1 to £40. Compared to the cost of getting the Eurostar train or taking the ferry, this is a bargain (although trips on Megabus’ will take a lot longer by comparison).

After looking up the fares online for a date in May I found that traveling from London to Paris with Megabus takes 9 hours 15 mins but costs just £4 for a one-way ticket.

By comparison, the same journey on the Eurostar takes just 2 hours 16 mins but costs £112 for a one-way ticket.

To put this in perspective, traveling to Paris from London on the Eurostar is 28 times more expensive than on a Megabus (although the Megabus takes 4.1 times as long to get there).
