Five of the Best Arts and Music Festivals from Around the World

There are many great art and music festivals around the world, so choosing which one to go to can be difficult.

Some of the best festivals attract high numbers of visitors, and as such, the thrill of being at the festival (due to the atmosphere created) can be as great an experience as the art and music that’s presented.

Arts Festivals

There are many arts festivals across the world, and some of the best are the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the Festival D’Avignon.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival takes place every year for three weeks in August. With thousands of performers on many stages throughout the city, the festival is one of the biggest examples of music, opera, theatre, dance and comedy.

There are many free events throughout the three-week period along with the paid events. It’s a good idea to stay in one of the several Edinburgh hotels in the surrounding area, keep yourself in close proximity to the festival.

Edinburgh Festival

The Hong Kong Arts Festival runs from January to March and is the number one performing arts festival in Asia. The festival showcases the best of international artists alongside the local upcoming artists.

The festival has performing arts events at 17 venues spread over a 45-day period with 166 different artists performing a range of classical dance, opera, contemporary dance and theatre.

The Festival D’Avignon is an annually held arts festival in the French city of Avignon, which is one of the oldest in France. The festival takes place over a three-week period in July and artists perform in 35 to 40 different shows.

The performers are a mixture of French and non-French speaking acts with many of the productions being premieres. The festival uses many of Avignon’s historical locations and transforms them into outdoor venues. The Festival D’Avignon attracts over 20,000 visitors each year.

Film Festivals

Of the many film festivals that take place each year, the most famous and prestigious is surely the Cannes International Film Festival.

The Cannes International Film Festival will run from the 16th to the 27th of May in 2012, and is one of the world’s most publicised film festivals as it is renowned for showcasing the world’s newest and brightest upcoming films and film stars.

The festival shows films in many different languages. For those who wish to do a bit of star spotting, many of Hollywood’s biggest stars often turn up for the film premieres.

Coachella

Music Festivals

There are many great music festivals throughout the world (such as Glastonbury), but the most prestigious festival for music worldwide has to the Coachella Arts and Music Festival.

The Coachella Arts and Music Festival in Indio, California, is spread over two weekends in April. The festival showcases sculptural art and music from many different bands and genres (including electronic, hip hop, indie and rock).

Amongst this year’s line-up are artists such as Pulp and the High Flying Birds. The festival has shuttle buses providing transport to and from the location and it’s a festival that prides itself on being eco-friendly and kind to the environment.
