How to Avoid Hotel Cancellation Fees
Ever had to cancel your hotel reservation and been stung by the cancellation fees?
Most hotels will charge you this ‘cancellation fee’ if you cancel your booking within 24 hours of your expected arrival.
This isn’t a problem if you cancel your trip well ahead of time, but if your flight into town is cancelled or re-routed (or you have a last minute emergency) it’s very possible that you’ll be too late in cancelling and be charged.
So what can you do to avoid such a fee?
It seems Reddit user ‘drwired‘ has the answer:
“To avoid this late cancellation fee, simply call and change your reservation to a future date that is outside the fee window. Then, call back (speaking to someone else) and cancel your reservation.”
For the best results, after re-scheduling your booking, wait a day before calling back and cancelling. Some call centres will keep recent call logs and records on screen (with the problems each caller had), so by waiting till the next day you should be removed from the immediate call log.
Changing your reservation to a later date before cancelling won’t always avoid being charged a fee (as some hotels will charge you regardless of when you cancel), but it will work a lot of the time.
