Why Taking a Gap Year Before College is Good for Students

As the school year begins to come to an end, many student will no-doubt be thinking about taking a gap year before moving on to college/university.

However, many people worry that taking a job will negatively affect their careers prospects or their future plans.

Liz Roberts (an English Professor) of NJ.com reports on this matter:

Yes, it sounds shocking, but there’s nothing wrong with taking a break from education and meeting the real world head-on. Kids shouldn’t listen to those old tales of “If you don’t go when you’re 18, you‘ll never go.” Not heading straight to college after high school is actually a blessing.

Pretty interesting opinion there Liz, but won’t taking a gap year hurt my chances of getting a job?

Any recent or unemployed alum will testify that acquiring a diploma is no sure-fire guarantee for any job. Many college grads have fallen back on their parents for support. This works great for trust-fund babies — not so well for the children of average middle-class parents who themselves are struggling to survive.

Note that taking a gap year is not an excuse to slack off or delay making tough decisions for a year – it should be a time for self-discovery, adventure and growth, so that you can find out what it is your really like and what you want to do with your life.

So what should you do during your gap year? Work, volunteering and traveling (or some combination of the three) are the most popular choices.

The idea of taking a gap year or even a few years off may sound wasteful — even sinful. Teens should look at it from this angle: They’ll receive a better education by not attending college. Let life be their campus for one or two.
