How to Get a Working Holiday Visa for Australia

Getting an Australian working holiday visa is the starting point to living, working and traveling around Australia (undoubtedly one of the most amazing countries in the world).

Many people dream of traveling to Oz, and by getting an Australian working visa you can supplement and extend your travels through periods of sporadic work.

If you’ve ever wanted to experience life down under and really immerse yourself in the Australian culture, getting a visa to work in Australia can open many doors to you, and on this page I’ll show you how.

Things You Need to Know About the Australian Working Holiday Visa

To get a working holiday visa for Australia you must:

  • Be between the ages of 18 and 30 (at least at the time of your application).
  • Not have entered the country through an Australian working holiday visa before.
  • Have a valid passport from one of the countries recognized in the working holiday scheme (more on this later).
  • Not apply more than 12 months in advance of when you wish to enter Australia.

A successful Australian working visa application will then allow you to live and work in Australia for up to 12 months (during which time you are free to leave and re-enter the country as much as you like).

Note also the current fee for a visa to work in Australia is $235 (at the time of publication).

How to Get a Working Holiday Australia Visa

There are two types of Australian work holiday visa (known as ‘Subclass 417’ and ‘Subclass 462’) and I’ll go into detail on both.

While it might sound confusing, both types are pretty much the same thing – which one you apply for just depends on which country you’re from.

Australian Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 417)
This visa is open to people from the following countries:

  • United Kingdom
  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • Republic of Cyprus
  • Denmark
  • Estonia
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Hong Kong
  • Republic of Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Republic of Korea
  • Malta
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Sweden
  • Taiwan

To apply for this visa you must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and if approved you’re permitted to live and work in Australia for up to 12 months.

Australian Working Holiday Visa (Subclass 462)
This visa is open to people from the following countries:

  • USA
  • Chile
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • Thailand
  • Turkey

Again, to apply you must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and if approved you’re permitted to live and work in Australia for up to 12 months.
